100 years Christian Camping Book logo

The interwoven numerals in the 100 year logo symbolise the many layers of people, places, and stories that come together in this history project. A clear, geometric typeface brings a sense of structure and longevity, creating a commemorative identity that spans 100 years of camping life. Gold and navy were selected for their timeless and trusted qualities. The book chronicles a century of Open Brethren heritage churches and their camping ministries across New Zealand.

Binding a century of stories

Built on Graham Ashby’s research, writing, and interviews, the project preserves stories that were close to being lost. Partnering with Andrew Killick for publishing and print, the book grew into a concise history of Christian camping and its importance in New Zealand. Christian camps responded directly to a pressing need, planting gospel seeds that brought hope in place of fear.

A foundational web presence

The website was developed early in the life of the project, created to build momentum and invite public engagement. It prioritised clarity, accessibility, and storytelling, offering a clear entry point into the wider history being uncovered. While the project later evolved beyond its initial structure, the website served as a foundational platform, helping bring the history project into the public space during its formative stage.

Designed as a teaser for what was to come, the site featured a curated selection of archival photographs and short narrative excerpts drawn from camping memories and adventures. These early glimpses hinted at the depth and richness of the stories still being gathered.

Strong foundations, clean design, and subtle references to book publishing shaped a calm and reputable online presence. Clear typography and easy-to-read segments ensured the content remained accessible, creating a welcoming space for the wider community.

Crafting a book to hold a century

As the importance of the stories became clear, and the way many of them intertwined, it was evident the book needed the space to honour the depth of these shared histories. The format allowed the founders’ efforts and experiences to be presented with the care and respect they deserved.

Over two years were spent designing and proofing the book, with thoughtful attention given to layout, pacing, and visual elements. The design was guided by a sense of timelessness, intentionally avoiding short-lived trends in favour of quiet longevity. Subtle references to traditional woven motifs connect history and design, while giving each camp its own chapter to tell its story through its own voice.
